After the initial excitement you wonder what all the fuss was about?’. In the words of Kevin Emes,’I agree and there's probably also a virginity analogy. The theme shows that perhaps the use of analytics and big data has moved beyond the ‘teenage sex’ analogy and is maturing into a more stable industry. This number shows us one thing though and that is that there is a limited pool of those who work in data. So what does this show us about the wider data community? Are there now fewer people involved in Big Data? In reality, this is not the case and we have seen that the industry is not shrinking, but is growing. This year we have seen a slight levelling off with us hitting 100,000 within a day of the group’s birthday. In the second year we actually grew by over 400%, from 3,490 people to 14,906. Since its founding in February 2009 the group has had an impressive positive growth curve and has maintained at least a 100% annual growth rate. One of the interesting things about the group is that although we are still growing rapidly, the pace of growth has declined in the past year. This throws up a number of questions as the group manager, to what extent is this true and can we use numbers to see if this is the case? “Big Data is like teenage sex: Everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it too” Our most popular discussion is from Simon Matthews and the title is: What is interesting is which conversations gain the most traction. This is not necessarily a case of monitoring every aspect of what is said and commented on in the group (having just passed the 100,000 member mark, monitoring every conversation and comment would be impossible). "Many of us at Roblox are parents ourselves and we understand how daunting it can be to set the right controls for your kids when they are online, which is why we focus on making our parental controls easy to use.One of the most compelling things about running one of the largest Big Data and Analytics specific groups on Linkedin is what people talk about. We provide parents with robust parental controls to limit or disable who their kids can chat with on Roblox, decide who can send them messages, what experiences they can play, and how much they can spend. Adults no longer need to search extensively for children online to groom as these algorithms will recommend users to one another."Ī Roblox spokesperson told The Sun: “We have a safety-first culture at Roblox. "The data algorithms used by popular games to recommend in-game play also facilitate the contact recommendation systems. The 48-year-old office worker from Billericay, Essex, says: “Having had experience of predatory men when I was growing up, I always thought I was vigilant with my 8-year-old daughter’s safety, but just over a year ago I had a massive wake-up call.”ĭr Rachel O’Connell, founder and CEO of TrustElevate, a child age verification and data privacy platform, adds: "As we've seen reported, the systems used to track and take inappropriate games offline simply aren't working, leaving children vulnerable to sexually explicit material.
